Almost everything on a garage door is safe to work on. Sensors, remotes, keypads, weather seals, hinges, rollers and the opener itself hold no stored energy, and a mistake there costs a replacement part. Two things do not fall in that category: the counterbalance system — springs, cables, drums and the bottom bracket — and any door whose spring has already broken.

That distinction is not an editorial opinion or a liability hedge. Under 16 CFR 1211.16(b) the federal government specifies the exact words a manufacturer must print in the manual that shipped with your opener, and one of them directs repairs to cables and spring assemblies to a qualified service person. Any page teaching spring replacement as a weekend job is contradicting the manufacturer's own mandated instructions.

Every page that touches a physical procedure carries one of three verdicts — safe to DIY, DIY with caution, or call a professional — placed directly under the heading and before the answer, with an icon and a text label as well as a colour, so it reads at a glance in a dark garage from a phone.

The numbers come from primary documents: 16 CFR 1211 on the eCFR, CPSC publications, DASMA technical data sheets and manufacturer manuals. When a widely quoted figure cannot be traced, we say so on the page instead of repeating it.

Start from the symptom, not the part

Almost nobody arrives here looking for a part. They arrive because the door is doing something odd: it will not close, it reverses halfway, it made a loud noise, or it simply stopped responding. The single most common cause is worth stating up front: a door that will not close is almost always a dirty or misaligned photo eye, not a failing opener. Federal rules require a blocked beam to prevent closing entirely, so a dusty lens presents as a completely dead door. Wiping it takes four minutes and costs nothing.

The one-minute test almost nobody runs

Lay a two-by-four flat on the floor in the door's path and close the door. It must reverse on contact. That instruction is not ours — it is text federal law requires the manufacturer to print in your opener's manual, and it asks for the test monthly.

It matters because this system fails silently: a door whose reversal has stopped working looks and sounds exactly like one that still does. CPSC reports about 73 children aged 2 to 14 trapped and killed under automatic garage doors since March 1982, and that record is why the standard exists.

In English and Spanish

All safety content, part pages, symptom pages, the glossary and the policy set exist in both languages, and the build fails if any of them lacks its counterpart. Garage door installation and repair labour in the United States is heavily Hispanic and Spanish-language safety content is close to nonexistent, which is why the safety hub was the first thing localised rather than the last.

What we do not publish

We do not publish procedures for replacing springs, cables or drums, and that is not an omission — it is an automated check that fails the build if a page carrying a professional-only verdict ever contains numbered steps, a tools list, or how-to structured data. Half the sites in this vertical publish that guide; we could not if we wanted to.

We also do not publish numeric opener force settings, regional price multipliers, state licensing requirements we have not verified, or the injury statistics that circulate across this industry whose only traceable sources are repair companies and law firms. Where there is a gap, we say so on the page.

Readable where you actually need it

A large share of the people who arrive here are standing in a garage with a car inside, looking at a phone on a bad connection. So every page paints its heading, its direct answer and its safety verdict before any JavaScript runs, and stays readable with JavaScript disabled entirely.
